Hola amigos,
have I impressed you with my expert level Spanish straight from the country where the language itself was born: Spain? Sad story, I wrote out a lot about my current surroundings in an Almería finca but deleted it by accident and I truly don’t know if I can recount with such gusto again. I’m a gorger and a disgorger, I must have everything all at once and I simply cannot add little edits and make dainty little changes over a long period of time, it gets spewed all over the page, I glance over it once and then it’s done.
Summary: I am at an artist residency in the desert. There are cacti, pine, mimosas, funny yellow firework flowers on long succulent stems. It’s dry, and dusty, and there is a strong wind. The Levante, I’m told, which is an annual guest from the Sahara?? The farmers look forward to it every year as it brings nutrients to their soil. We had some droplets of rain yesterday, the first since May apparently. I turn every tap consciously. Tomorrow I must knuckle down and actually paint some pictures. I’m doing diaries, which I’ll share at the end, or midway if you’re lucky. UNTIL THEN you are treated to my entries from the second half of 2023 :)
I dropped the ball. I was busy, and then everything kicked off in Gaza and I kinda felt like what’s the point documenting my silly frilly life. It’s still very much a concern, but something I have to figure out how to include and process rather than cancel drawing completely.
thank you for tuning into my summary of 2023. I know I did not summarise it verbally but perhaps you get the gist from the pictures. Although looking at the pictures now, it is a very vague story that I am weaving. It’s important to challenge your audience. I learned that from Saltburn, which ended up being the most over-iterated film I have ever seen. “Don’t do a Saltburn on it” I whisper to myself every time I put a flourish on a drawing.
that's so beautiful
